Nehemiah Baptist Church is now offering Premarital Counseling! Getting Married???????
Have you considered the benefits of Premarital Counseling? Today great attention and care is given to the planning of the wedding ceremony, but little to no preparation is sought or given toward the couple who has made the vow to remain together until death do us part. The fact is that that multitudes of couples are not prepared to live life together.
Why Premarital Counseling? The concept or belief that marriage is for life is becoming old-fashioned and nearly obsolete in our culture today. Nonetheless, there must be a response to reduce the number of weak marriages and divorce that affects society and the church equally. Premarital counseling is a valuable means to deal with potential divorce causing factors before the couple says “I do”. Did you know that 90% of couples who have taken premarital counseling would do it again. What are the goals in Premarital Counseling? My (Pastor Brian Harmon) philosophy of premarital counseling has always been to provide: a biblical foundation for marriage and educate with the intention to reduce the risk of divorce. What does Premarital Counseling do for an engaged couple? There is an old adage that speaks to the value of premarital counseling. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Much of what premarital counseling does for a couple is to educate them with the idea of heading off problems before they happen or before they become more damaging to the relationship.
How kind of time commitment is involved for a couple who chooses to participate in Premarital Counseling? The Premarital Counseling curriculum is divided into 9 sessions with 1 to 2 follow-up sessions six months to one year following the nuptials. Each session will last 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Also there will be additional homework that accompanies each session and some homework that covers material not addressed in the class.
What does Premarital Counseling cost? I do not charge a fee for teaching the Premarital Counseling sessions because I view this counseling as a community service. However each couple will be responsible for purchasing the textbook and workbooks that will be used during the sessions. The approximate cost for these books are $40.00 -$50.00.
